Many of us may notice an unpleasant odour in our mouth as soon as we wake up in the morning. This situation is usually normal, but it is possible to reduce it with some precautions. In this week’s article, I would like to talk about the main causes and solutions of morning bad breath…
- Reduced Saliva
During sleep, saliva production slows down or even stops. Saliva cleans the bacteria in the mouth. When it decreases, the number of bacteria increases and odour develops.
Drinking water before going to bed and taking care to breathe through the nose to reduce dry mouth may help.
- Bacteria accumulation on the tongue
The surface of the tongue is one of the places where bacteria adhere the most. The tongue should also be brushed every night with a tongue cleaner or toothbrush.
- Tooth decay and tartar
Caries and tartar in the mouth are a shelter for bacteria. Regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings should not be neglected.
- Starving at Night or Diets
Hunger triggers bad breath. The body produces ketones and this foul-smelling waste product is exhaled with the breath.
Eating a balanced diet and not eating too late in the evening reduces this odour.
- Mouth Breathing
Breathing through the mouth increases dryness. If there are nasal obstructions, it is important to have them treated.
- Smoking
Tobacco products are important causes of bad breath.
- Inadequate Oral Hygiene
Lack of regular brushing and flossing causes bacteria to multiply. Teeth should be brushed and flossed at least twice a day.
Remember, it is not fate to wake up in the morning with a bad taste in your mouth. You can prevent this situation by changing your habits.
