What causes gum inflammation in children, and how does it heal?

Gingivitis in children is more common than people think, and is often dismissed by families as temporary pain or redness. However, when detected early and treated correctly, it is quite easy to control. So, what causes gingivitis in children? Let me explain this first.

1) Inadequate plaque removal

The most common cause of gingivitis is poor brushing habits. Plaque that accumulates on the surface of the teeth causes bacteria to multiply and irritate the gums.
2) Sensitivity during tooth replacement

The period between the ages of 6 and 12 is a time when milk teeth fall out and permanent teeth come in. This period naturally makes the gums more sensitive. Children sometimes avoid brushing, which facilitates inflammation. However, in a well-cleaned mouth, redness or itching of the gums may occur during the eruption of permanent teeth. This is completely normal, but it is still advisable to consult your dentist in such a case.

3) Sugar consumption and irregular eating habits

Frequent sugar consumption, especially sticky foods, increases plaque formation. Vitamin deficiencies also reduce gum resistance, facilitating inflammation.

So, what can you, as parents, do to help your children get through this process more easily? Let’s talk a little about that.

1) Establish a regular and proper brushing routine

Brushing for two minutes at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush suitable for the child’s age is sufficient. Flavoured toothpastes can increase motivation for children. Also, children at this age tend to follow your example. The best approach is for you to maintain your own morning and evening brushing routine and make it a habit together with your child.

2) Have them gargle with warm salt water

A salt water solution reduces inflammation and soothes the gums. It can be used once or twice a day. This is a simple but very effective step. Of course, you must consult your doctor before doing this and eliminate the cause of the inflammation.
