Teeth Caught Between Hot and Cold

If you feel a sudden twinge in your teeth when taking the first sip of a cold drink or starting your day with a hot coffee, this is a silent warning from your teeth. It is often dismissed as something that lasts only a short while and passes; however, these minor twinges carry important messages about your oral health. Your teeth do not speak, but through their reactions, they tell you that something is not quite right.

In this week’s article, I will explain the five most common underlying causes of tooth sensitivity.

1.    The gradual wear of tooth enamel is one of the most common causes. Aggressive brushing with hard-bristled toothbrushes or using whitening toothpastes containing abrasive ingredients can thin the protective layer of the tooth, increasing sensitivity. Adopting a gentler brushing routine and using products suitable for sensitive teeth can make a significant difference here.

2.    Gum recession is another major cause of sensitivity. As the gums recede, the root surfaces that should normally be protected are exposed, leaving them vulnerable to stimuli such as hot and cold. Correct brushing techniques and regular dental check-ups are essential to prevent this condition from worsening.

3.    Cavities in the teeth or small, invisible cracks can also cause sensitivity in a similar way. These problems, which progress into the inner structure of the tooth, allow external stimuli to reach the nerve tissue more easily. Therefore, regular check-ups ensure that problems which are difficult to detect are identified at an early stage.

4. Daily dietary habits are also more influential than one might think. Frequent consumption of acidic foods and drinks weakens tooth enamel, paving the way for sensitivity. Balancing the oral environment, particularly after consuming lemon-flavoured drinks or fizzy and energy drinks, helps to reduce this effect.
5. This final point concerns a habit that is very common today. The habit of teeth grinding and clenching, which many people do without even realising it, causes microscopic wear on the tooth surface. Over time, this manifests as sensitivity. Even simple measures, such as using a night guard for habits that occur at night, can protect teeth in the long term.
Although tooth sensitivity is often perceived as a minor inconvenience, it is actually an early warning sign from your oral health. Rather than ignoring these signals, trying to understand them is the simplest way to prevent more serious problems. Because a healthy smile can be protected by recognising these small signals.
