Don’t sweat the small stuff

When it comes to brushing your teeth, the most frequently asked question is: “Should I brush for 3 minutes or 5 minutes?” In fact, what matters is not watching the stopwatch, but ensuring effective cleaning.

However, it must be made clear that effective tooth brushing should generally not take less than 2 minutes. Not all brushing is the same. There can be a significant difference between two different brushing sessions carried out for the same duration.

Simply rushing over the visible surfaces of the teeth, no matter how long it takes, does not provide adequate cleaning. Using the correct technique, you must clean all surfaces in a specific order, paying attention to the gum-to-tooth junction.

So, is brushing for longer better? No. In particular, brushing for a long time whilst applying excessive pressure can damage tooth enamel and lead to receding gums.

A short and careless brushing session brings with it problems such as plaque build-up, cavities and bad breath. In contrast, effective brushing means healthier gums, a cleaner mouth and, in the long term, less need for treatment.

I’d also like to give you a little tip to help you gauge how well you’ve cleaned your teeth: use your tongue after brushing. After brushing your teeth, check the surfaces with your tongue. Run your tongue over all the surfaces of your teeth. If you feel a rough or bumpy area, that area hasn’t been cleaned properly and needs to be brushed again. This simple habit helps you spot any missed areas and significantly improves the quality of your brushing.

In summary, don’t get hung up on the minutes; brush using the correct technique, for a sufficient duration and with care.
