One of the most common complaints of my patients is the sudden onset and sometimes intermittent tooth aching. It is often postponed, but there is often an underlying problem. Here are the five most common causes and my solution suggestions:
- Caries
When the tooth enamel decays and breaks, the dentin layer underneath is exposed and leads to leakage. In this case, the decay should be cleaned and filled without wasting time.
- Gum recession
When the tooth root is exposed, hot-cold sensitivity begins. In this case, I recommend a soft brush and desensitising toothpaste to my patients.
- Enamel wear
Enamel becomes thinner due to acidic drinks, hard brushing or teeth grinding. In such cases, I apply preventive treatments such as the use of night plates and filling the abraded area.
- Tooth clenching/grinding
Bruxism, i.e. clenching, causes microcracks in the teeth. In this case, a night plate and masseter botox may be useful.
- New procedures
After some fillings or coatings, there may be temporary oozing. If this lasts for several weeks, your dentist may need to check the procedure.
Remember, a aching tooth is a signal. Do not ignore this warning your body gives you. Early intervention saves the tooth from extraction…
