Wet putty or dry putty?

Tooth brushing habits may vary from person to person. While some of us squeeze the toothpaste on the brush and take it to our mouth without wetting it, some of us cannot do without wetting it with water first. So, is it the right habit to wet the toothpaste after putting it on the brush? Let’s examine it together.

Soaking toothpaste has some disadvantages:

  1. It increases foaming and shortens the time. Wet paste foams quickly and many people end the process without brushing their teeth sufficiently. However, brushing for at least two minutes is necessary for an effective tooth cleaning.
  2. It can reduce its effectiveness by changing the structure of the paste. Toothpastes are produced in a certain consistency. Adding extra water can soften the consistency of the paste, causing it to mix with saliva without spreading to all teeth.
  3. It is possible that the bristles on the toothbrush may soften, reducing mechanical cleaning. While dry bristles remove plaque and food debris more effectively, bristles exposed to excess water can soften and lose this effect. For this reason alone, it may be more beneficial to keep two toothbrushes at home and use one in the morning and one in the evening so that the bristles can dry well.

For this reason, using toothpaste without wetting it can provide a more effective tooth cleaning. However, the important thing here is the correct brushing technique and brushing for sufficient time.

Finally, let me give an interesting toothbrushing tip: Do not rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth. Spitting is sufficient for the active ingredients of the paste to penetrate the tooth enamel better. In this way, your teeth will be protected against decay for longer.

I wish you healthy smiles!
