There are two popular materials that come to mind when it comes to dental aesthetics: Empress lamina and zirconium. So, which one is better?
In this week’s article, I will try to summarise this issue, which closely concerns our patients who want an aesthetic change in their teeth, in 3 articles.
- Naturalness or Durability?
Empress lamina offers an aesthetic appearance that cannot be distinguished from natural teeth thanks to its light transmittance. So if you dream of a Hollywood smile, Empress is for you! But be careful when biting something hard, because it can be fragile due to its thin structure. We usually forbid our patients who use Empress lamina to eat hard-shelled foods.
Zirconium, on the other hand, is more durable and can be easily used on the back teeth. If it is made by a skilled dental technician and an experienced dentist, it can give aesthetic results as much as Empress.
- Which one is preferred in which case?
If you want an aesthetic change in your front teeth, Empress is ideal. Thanks to its thin structure, minimum abrasion is made from the surface of your tooth.
However, if you have large fractures in your teeth, the need for a bridge, discolouration, or a habit of clenching your teeth or biting your nails, zirconium is a more robust option.
- Price and Cost Differences
Empress is usually slightly more expensive than zirconium, as it requires a more laborious production and application process. However, you can make the best choice with your dentist according to your budget and needs.
As a result, there is no single answer to the question ‘Which is better?’. When designing your smile, it is important to choose the most suitable option for your expectations and tooth structure. For this reason, you can determine the most suitable treatment for you by talking to your dentist.
